What Are Common Behaviors of Autism?
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects how individuals communicate, interact, and experience the world. While every child is unique, there are some common behaviors often associated with autism.
1. Communication Differences
Many autistic children may have delayed speech, limited verbal skills, or prefer nonverbal communication like gestures or pictures. Some may repeat words or phrases, known as echolalia.
2. Social Challenges
Difficulty making eye contact, understanding social cues, or engaging in back-and-forth conversations is common. Some children may prefer to play alone or struggle with forming friendships.
3. Repetitive Behaviors
Autistic individuals may engage in repetitive movements such as hand-flapping, rocking, or lining up toys. These behaviors often provide comfort and help manage stress.
4. Strong Preference for Routine
Changes in daily schedules or unexpected events can cause anxiety. Predictable routines help children feel secure and in control.
5. Sensory Sensitivities
Many children with autism are highly sensitive to sounds, lights, textures, or smells. Overstimulation can lead to meltdowns or withdrawal.
Recognizing these behaviors early allows families to seek support and interventions that make a positive difference.
