What Benefits Can You Claim for Autism?

January 22, 2026

Families of children with autism may be eligible for several financial, medical, and educational benefits designed to reduce costs and improve access to care. One of the most common is Supplemental Security Income (SSI), which provides monthly financial support for children with disabilities based on household income. Many families also qualify for Medicaid, which can cover therapies like ABA, speech, and occupational therapy.

Through school systems, children with autism may receive services under an Individualized Education Program (IEP), including specialized instruction, therapy, and classroom accommodations at no cost. Some states also offer autism waiver programs that help pay for in-home therapy, respite care, and behavioral support.

Private insurance plans are often required to cover autism services, including ABA therapy, under state autism mandates. Families may also be able to claim tax credits, medical deductions, and flexible spending account (FSA/HSA) reimbursements for therapy and related expenses.

At Divine Steps ABA, we help families to better understand their benefits and access covered ABA therapy in Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina with less stress.
