What are the Signs of Autism in a 4-Year-Old?

June 15, 2025

Every 4-year-old is unique—some are chatty, some are shy, some are always moving. But sometimes, certain behaviors stand out in a way that makes you pause.

If your child is showing signs that seem different from other kids their age, it might be time to look a little closer.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often shows up around this age, and early support can make a world of difference.

Things You Might Notice

By age 4, most kids are talking up a storm, asking “why?” a hundred times a day, and diving into pretend play. But children with autism may approach the world a bit differently.

Here are some things parents often notice:

  • Your child doesn’t always respond to their name
  • They may avoid eye contact or seem “in their own world”
  • Speech is delayed—or they repeat the same words or phrases
  • They prefer playing alone rather than with others
  • They’re super focused on specific things (like lining up toys)
  • Loud noises or scratchy clothes might really bother them
  • You might see repetitive movements like hand-flapping or spinning

Of course, every kid is different. Seeing one or two of these signs doesn’t always mean autism—but if several feel familiar, it’s a good idea to talk with a specialist and have an autism evaluation.

If any of this sounds like your child, you’re not alone—and there is help. At Divine Steps ABA, we offer personalized autism therapy that’s designed to meet your child exactly where they are.

With the right autism support, amazing progress is possible. Let’s take the next step together.
