How to Help My Child Learn to Ask for Help When They Are Frustrated?

February 17, 2026

For many children with autism, frustration often leads to meltdowns or withdrawal because they haven’t yet learned how to ask for help. Teaching this skill is essential, and ABA therapy provides practical strategies to make it possible.

The first step is modeling simple language. Parents can use short, clear phrases like “Help me, please” during everyday tasks. Pairing these words with visual supports, such as picture cards or gestures, gives children multiple ways to communicate their needs.

ABA therapists often use prompting and reinforcement. For example, when a child shows signs of frustration, the therapist may prompt them to say or show “help.” Once the child does, they receive immediate support and positive reinforcement. Over time, prompts fade, and the child learns to independently request help before frustration escalates.

Consistency at home is key. Parents can practice during small moments, like opening a snack or solving a puzzle so the skill becomes natural. This not only reduces stress but also builds confidence and independence.

At Divine Steps ABA, we are serving families, and we teach children practical communication skills like asking for help through ABA therapy programs in Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina.
