Who Is the Longest Living Autistic Person?

February 5, 2026

When discussing autism and longevity, one remarkable story stands out, that of Donald Gray Triplett, the first person ever diagnosed with autism. Born in 1933 in Forest, Mississippi, Donald was identified as “Case 1” by Dr. Leo Kanner in 1943. Despite living in a time when autism was poorly understood, Donald thrived with the support of his family and community.

He worked as a banker, enjoyed travel, and was known for his savant abilities, including musical recognition and rapid mental calculations. Most importantly, he lived a full and independent life, passing away in June 2023 at the age of 89. His journey demonstrates that autism itself does not limit life expectancy, what matters most is access to healthcare, inclusion, and consistent support.

Donald’s story is a powerful reminder that with the right environment, autistic individuals can live long, meaningful lives.
