What's Worse, ADHD or Autism?

January 29, 2026

There is no clear answer to “what’s worse, ADHD or autism,” because they are different conditions with different challenges, not a ranking of severity. Both can affect learning, behavior, relationships, and daily life, but in very different ways.

ADHD often involves difficulties with attention, impulse control, and hyperactivity. Autism affects social communication, sensory processing, flexibility, and understanding social cues. Some people have mild challenges, while others need significant daily support. In fact, many individuals are diagnosed with both  ADHD and autism, showing that these conditions can overlap.

What truly matters is not which condition is “worse,” but how much support a person needs to thrive. A child with autism may struggle more with communication and change, while a child with ADHD may have a harder time staying focused and regulating impulses. Each child’s experience is unique, and progress depends on early intervention, understanding, and the right therapies.

At Divine Steps ABA, we support children with autism through ABA therapy in Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina and co-occurring ADHD by building communication, emotional regulation, and life skills.
