Is Asperger's Syndrome Autism?
Yes, Asperger’s syndrome is considered part of autism. Today, it is no longer a separate diagnosis. In the DSM-5, the diagnostic manual used by doctors, Asperger’s syndrome was included under the broader term Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
In the past, Asperger’s described individuals who had average or above-average intelligence and strong language skills but struggled with social communication, understanding social cues, and flexible thinking. Many people who were once diagnosed with
Asperger’s would now be diagnosed with
Level 1 Autism, meaning they need some support but can often function independently in many areas.
The change in terminology helps professionals focus less on labels and more on individual strengths and support needs. Every person on the spectrum is different, and the type of help they need can vary widely, regardless of what diagnosis they received years ago.
