What Are the Three Main Causes of Autism?

January 9, 2026

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition, and while there’s no single cause, research points to three main contributing factors:

  1. Genetics – Studies show that autism often runs in families. Specific gene mutations or combinations may influence brain development and increase the likelihood of ASD.

  2. Prenatal and Perinatal Factors – Exposure to certain environmental risks during pregnancy—such as infections, complications at birth, or advanced parental age, may raise the risk of autism.

  3. Brain Development Differences – Brain imaging studies reveal that some individuals with autism have differences in brain structure and connectivity, especially in areas related to communication and social behavior.

It’s important to note that vaccines do not cause autism, a claim repeatedly disproven by scientific research. Autism is not caused by parenting style or emotional trauma.

Understanding these causes helps families focus on early intervention and support rather than blame or myths.
